      <image:title>PROJECTS - ELDER SIX</image:title>
<image:caption>Our Work We take low value organic waste and convert it into a stable carbon building block, to create the next generation of building materials. Different feedstocks can have very different properties when they are converted to biochar and we aim to develop new and innovative carbon negative composites by mixing them with a variety of organic binders.</image:caption>

      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/616092622130566f75d6d1d0/1646603396674-CXAD7VYUP5RAPHV1ZHYG/IMG_0344-carbonator.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>PROJECTS - ELDER SIX - What is Biochar?</image:title>
<image:caption>Biochar is black carbon produced from biomass through pyrolysis or thermal conversion. It can be made from almost any organic biomass, from wood to rice hulls to corn stover to manure. Upon thermal conversion the biomass carbon is transformed into a more stable form and therefor sequestered from the atmosphere. Biochar does not refer to a singular product with a given set of chemical and physical characteristics. Rather, biochar spans the spectrum of black carbon forms and it is chemically and physically unique as a function of the feedstock, creation process (pyrolysis unit), cooling, and storage conditions. Biochar has been created and used by humans as a soil additive for more than two millennia, but only in the past decade have we really started to explore the other possibilities of this incredible material.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PROJECTS - ELDER SIX - Disrupting the Carbon Cycle.</image:title>
<image:caption>When a tree falls in the woods, 99% of the encapsulated carbon returns to the atmosphere as C02. Just by making Biochar out of the approximately 1 billion tons of waste biomass produced annually in the world, we can create carbon syncs that would reduce the extra CO2 in the atmosphere by 1/3 by the end of the century. But we can do so much more with this amazing material before we put it back into the ground.</image:caption>

<image:title>PROJECTS - WILDERKILL - Located on a 200 year old farm 100 miles north of New York City, Wilderkill is a twelve-acre property in the Hudson Valley that faces the ridgeline of the Catskill Mountains. Wilderkill is a place of retreat, community, and reflection, where small groups and families can gather to contemplate how to be human in the midst of a climate crisis, and how we might build sustainable social, economic, and ecological support systems for our local communities in the coming decades.</image:title>

<image:caption>In the dozen years we have been coming here we realized that the land is best enjoyed when the experience is shared with others. Over the past 5 years I have been building and gently crafting the land through experiential design to make the time spent here more immersive with the natural ecosystems, through paths and small design interventions that highlight the natural features and encourage you to sit and observe, commune or meditate. The only way we are going to learn to take care of nature is to connect with it. The best way to connect with nature is to surround yourself in it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PROJECTS - UHURU - The Stoolen</image:title>
<image:caption>The Stoolen is the first piece I designed for our first collection in 2005, it is crafted from hardwood offcuts that are carefully hand-fitted into a unique pattern. Initially we used the scrap wood from custom projects in our shop to keep from throwing out the pieces of wood that were too small for our regular production. As we made more, we created a system of leaving containers at Brooklyn wood shops to collect scraps and divert them from the waste steam and into new products. The Stoolen and it’s variant, the metal Stoolen are both in the permanent collection of the Chipstone Foundation and were displayed and the Milwaukee Art Museum as part of the Green Furniture exhibition in 2009.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Bilge Chair The Bilge Lounge Chair is crafted from reclaimed bourbon barrel staves from Kentucky and recycled leaf springs from New York City fire trucks. The natural char of the inside of the staves is preserved and makes up the seat and back of the chair. The cantilever design of the spring steel base provides a gentle give and bounce when you sit adding an unpredicted level of comfort. 99% of the materials used to make this chair were diverted from the waste stream or scrapyard, preserving their form and inherent qualities turning them into a product that can last another hundred years. This piece was acquired as part of the permanent collection of the The Columbus Museum and displayed in 2020 as part of the exhibition Please have a seat: A Survey of American Chairs, 1820-2020</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Cyclone Lounger Probably my favorite piece I have designed and Uhuru’s most iconic. The Cyclone was the center piece of a line we made out of reclaimed ipe that came off the famed Coney island boardwalk. As we did more and more collections telling the story of materials, we got a name for ourselves, one day we got a call that they were ripping up part of the boardwalk and just throwing it in dumpsters. I jumped in my truck and drove down to check it out. Sure enough massive amounts of this beautiful wood from the South American rain forest was being trashed. We grabbed as much as we could and headed back to the shop. All the pieces in the collection were inspired by the land marked structures of Coney Island with this one of course based on the Cyclone rollercoaster. At 95 years old, it’s the second oldest in the world. The metal base references what appears to be a chaotic lattice of metal and wood with the seat emulating the undulating path of the track. The Cyclone Lounger was acquired by the Smithsonian Museum of American Art for their permanent collection. It has been on display at the Renwick Gallery several times, most notably for the 40 under 40: Craft Futures exhibit that ran form July 19, 2012 - February 3, 2013.</image:caption>

<image:title>ABOUT - We cannot continue to develop, make, buy, and use things that are only slightly less bad than conventional products, greenwashing our way into feeling fine. As designers we need to lead by creating products that are carbon negative— made from materials that sequester more carbon than they create in manufacturing and use. At end of life these products need to be easily reformed into new products for full circularity or returned to the ground to propagate soil regeneration and additional sequestration. How do we manifest products that are truly net zero or even carbon negative? We must focus our energy and invest in objects and businesses that are part of the solution not later but now. Equally important is the scalability of these products and enterprises. Unless we can create solutions that are on a path to affordability, they will never have the impact we need to make real change.</image:title>
